With pedestrian
fatalities on the rise,
drivers are encouraged not only to “DriveAloha” but to respect pedestrians’ right
of way as well. That’s why DTRIC endorses the state Department of Transportation’s
pedestrian safety education program called “Walk Wise Hawaii.”
Walk Wise Hawaii was created to reduce pedestrian deaths by focusing on safe
street crossing techniques and increasing driver awareness. Founded in 2004
as Walk Wise Kupuna to protect senior citizens, Walk Wise Hawaii has expanded
its focus to pedestrians and drivers in all age groups throughout the state.

Top family
vehicles for 2007, according to AAA and Parents magazine [back
to top]
The American Automobile Association (AAA) and Parents magazine have joined forces for the fifth year in a row to come up with the top vehicles for families in each of five categories. They selected a total of 15 vehicles in the categories of sedans, crossovers, economy vehicles, sport utilities and minivans. Chosen vehicles were ranked the highest in reliability, value, style, convenience, comfort and superior road performance.
To make these selections, Parents and AAA considered everything from airbags and fuel economy to cupholders and cargo space. The reviewers also tested a variety of child safety seats into every car, making sure it can be done easily and securely.
“We put the vehicles through real-life road tests that include everything from running errands to carpooling, to taking a family vacation,” said Sally Lee, Parents editor-in-chief.
According to Parents and AAA, safety was one of the primary concerns when they selected the top vehicles. Winners are among the top performers in crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
